Costa del Covid

Gulls flung like splinters
over stone, sand, foam and glitter.
Crash of light and waves
on white afternoons.
Empty streets.
Blank windows.
Lockdown at the seaside.

Evening Ritual

Grey mountains
fold a white village
into the setting sun above
the soft mother of pearl sea.
Under the early evening sky,
we step out to balconies,
applaud the healthcare workers.
Wait for the Guardia Civil and
the Policia parade with sirens
wailing, blue lights flashing.
They hold the Spanish flag,
play the anthem.
People cry.
